ESPHome Hardware Guidelines

  • mmWave presence sensors (LD2410) require continuous power and should not be used on battery nodes.
  • Add a 470uF electrolytic capacitor across 3.3V power rails to absorb Wi-Fi TX current spikes.

Before you build the node

Battery sizing is the last decision, not the first. What Home Assistant runs on, and which radio mesh your other devices already use, both change whether a DIY ESPHome node is the right answer at all.

Figures here are planning estimates. Per-board peak current is the 802.11b Wi-Fi TX row of the Espressif ESP32, ESP32-C3, ESP32-S3 and ESP8266EX datasheets at 3.3 V; the YAML follows the ESPHome component documentation. Verify against your own board and sensor revisions before committing to a battery.
